What is a QR Code?

A QR Code (Quick Response Code) is a two-dimensional matrix barcode invented in 1994 by the Japanese company Denso Wave. Unlike traditional 1D barcodes that read horizontally, QR codes store data both vertically and horizontally, allowing them to hold significantly more information in a compact area.

QR codes utilize built-in Reed-Solomon error correction algorithms. This structural redundancy allows scanners and smartphone cameras to accurately read the encoded payload even if up to 30% of the symbol surface is obscured, dirty, or damaged.
